Kidnap kingpin: Nigerians outraged over the ‘#FreeEvans’ campaign'
"Nigerians have continued to react to a spooky hashtag, #FreeEvans, which observers claim is geared towards securing public sympathy for self-confessed Lagos kidnap kingpin, Chukwudemeje George Onwamadike, aka Evans."--Punch
For about seven years, Evans was successful at, evading attempts by the Nigerian police to arrest him, but fate caught with him last week Saturday(June 10) when the men of police special squad arrested the kidnapper. He was arrested in at his No. 3, Fred Shoboyede Street, Magodo, Lagos home.
Evans "confessed to being responsible for many high-profile kidnap cases spanning several states of the country, the most critical of which took place in Lagos, with at least one incident leading to the death of about four persons".
"He has also confessed to earning money running into billions of naira from his unlawful activities, having charged some of his victims up to $1m each as ransom."
So when a creepy #freeevans group emerged, many Nigerians became alarmed about the movement because of all the atrocities committed by the criminal. "Nigerian are therefore concerned that any law-abiding citizen could campaign for his release."
